Deck Stairs

Look to an ornately turned wood design to add a touch of tradition to your space, or stick with forged iron for a look that marries timeless techniques with modern sensibilities. In his own family home (seen above), designer Jeffrey Alan Marks leaned into the beachy Montecito surroundings with balusters made of sturdy rope and attached with boat cleats. If you don’t want to cover your stairway but don’t want to leave it plain either, try your hand at illusions. With some creativity and a pro’s help, you can transform your plain stairway into anything you want. The stairs are painted such that they look like they have a carpet runner on them. You can also go full artsy and create a movie or nature scene on the stairway.

Metal Floating Stairs

From grand staircases and warm traditional styles to contemporary and industrial. Patterned ceramic tile on the stair risers hints at this home's sophisticated old-world style. The ornate metal railing adds another layer of pattern and architectural interest to the staircase.

Because stairways are often in the foyer, they are a big part of guest's first impressions of your home. This staircase certainly sets the tone for the rest of the home, in addition to literally forming a scene, thanks to non-repeating patterned wallpaper. "If you want to keep the budget down [on a stairway update], then you could paint the stairs a beautiful color, and then add a beautiful runner," recommends Riddle.

Colorful Painted Staircase

This sleek addition brings forth an unobstructed panorama, allowing the architectural beauty of the stairs and the surrounding space to shine through. Each step, seemingly hanging independently, beckons you to ascend into the clouds, challenging the conventions of traditional staircase design. Apart from their visual allure, floating stairs allow light to filter through effortlessly, enhancing the sense of openness in a room.

Just make sure to apply a coat of anti-slip floor finish or incorporate adhesive grips so that wooden stairs aren't a slippery hazard. "The simple elegance of a thin, iron staircase is timeless and elegant." You can also have a continuous LED strip recessed along the wall to ensure each spot on the stairs is illuminated. Like most other components of a stairway, the lighting has both aesthetic and functional roles. Without proper illumination, going up and down the stairs can be a safety hazard especially for children and the elderly.

They can also be problematic for little ones or older adults, and most building regulations do not allow them to be used as the primary staircase to the second story of a home. Slips and falls are common with these types of stairs, so step with care. Spiral staircases wind up from one level to a hole cut through the floor above. Each step is attached to a vertical support beam that runs between the two levels.

Though you may worry about the weight, steel steps are surprisingly light, meaning most metal steps for your deck or interior can be installed with the help of only one other person. Customize one of Paragon’s existing products to meet your ideal stair vision, from the wood species used to a custom color finish. Once you’ve finished your design, you can send your design over to a friendly stair designer for your free consultation.

A high-contrast painted staircase becomes a striking visual accent in a hallway, basement, or foyer. Here, designer Jana Donohoe paired a rich golden yellow with deep slate blue. In this Galveston, Texas, home, Elias created her own custom wood railing. “I was inspired by classic Chinese Chippendale millwork fences and their light and breezy—yet elevated—vibe, which fit perfectly in this bay house,” she comments.

This can be especially handy for long staircases as the art provides a distraction from the long journey up. Adding a rainbow of color to your risers makes a staircase feel playful and cheerful. Here, a pastel palette with subtle variations in color complements the honey-toned stair treads. Consider this simple do-it-yourself staircase design idea to save money on a costly stair runner. Painting a faux runner down the center of your stairs will create the same look as a store-bought rug but will cost just a fraction of the price.

To keep the footprint small, this homeowner opted for a ladder that swivels around and can be used to access out of reach items. "I believe the staircase should blend in easily with the home's design and surroundings," says Meacham. The railing is someplace where subtle yet impactful design is not only possible, but encouraged.

Every spiral staircase we design, from a standard spiral to double helical stairs, is a one-of-a-kind custom work of art, available in an endless array of wood species and steel finishes. In addition, Arcways can integrate wood, steel, stone, iron, and glass to customize spiral staircases to fit seamlessly into any architectural and aesthetic design. As you scroll through these inspirational photos, you'll find clever ways to use the space under your stairs — a reading nook, home library and tiny office, to name a few. You'll learn about different types of staircase design, like spiral, curved, L-shape and winder — plus, what might work best for your home. This elegant staircase by Character Revival Co. features wood treads and a classic wrought iron railing with a unique design.

Bridge House Tour 10:00A

Architect Dan Brunn has decided to use a long, slender layout for his own home design, developed in partnership with MODAA. The Bridge House LA is his new modern residence occupying 4,500 square feet in Los Angeles, California. It is placed on a plot where it stretches over a small stream, surrounded by lush landscapes. “The idea is to do something extraordinary with ordinary means”, says Brunn.

The natural cedar cladding received a water-based penetrative stain that creates a bleached look. The maintenance-free effect will trend towards grey over time, gradually assimilating to its environment. In the home’s den, a pair of fixed and casement windows create the perfect vertical frame for the towering tree trunk beyond. The warm and inviting kitchen occupies the space between the living and dining rooms, maintaining an open and fluid connection to both. Spanning an impressive 210 feet, Bridge House crosses directly over a brook running through the property, marrying the landscape with minimal disturbance.

The connected bathroom offers his and hers sinks, a bath, and a steam shower. While not all of the proposed homes were built, many serve as a representation of the simplistic aesthetic elements of mid-century modern architecture, highlighted by clean lines and delineated spaces. Rectangular in plan, the home is 20 feet wide by 210 feet long (six by 64 metres). A large portion of the dwelling, measuring 65 feet (20 metres) in length, bridges a natural stream, giving the house its name. Architect Dan Brunn, who leads an eponymous LA studio, designed the 4,500-square-foot (418-square-metre) house to serve as his full-time residence and a "demonstration of innovative systems and forward-thinking processes". While most homeowners own the land under their house, the bridge is presumably public land, Lee said.

Staying consistent with Brunn’s “less is more” approach to building, the home will occupy 4,500 square feet on a 15,000 square-foot lot. At the home’s façade, the dialogue with nature is strengthened by the materiality of the exterior cladding. Supplied by Real Cedar, the knotty grade wood was elevated to a more modern aesthetic by the custom stain, and joint-free vertical application. "Sometimes they think it’s a monolithic material. They get surprised when they walk closer, then touch it." The color and tone of the cedar changes in response to light and viewing conditions. Over time, the color will trend towards grey as the cedar naturally weathers, further blurring the distinction between the home and its surroundings.

The design exemplifies Brunn’s signature minimalist aesthetic, evident in dynamic spatial choreography of light and volume. “The idea is to do something extraordinary with ordinary means,'' says Brunn . Nestled in the heart of Hancock Park, Bridge House LA reimagines residential building with a deep respect for the environment and a strong connection to nature. Designed by Dan Brunn, AIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture, this unique “bridge house” spans 65 feet (19.8 meters) over a natural stream, earning its distinctive name. The 4,500-square-foot (418-square-meter) home, brought to life with the assistance of trusted partner MODAA Inc., showcases innovative systems and forward-thinking design principles.

Furthermore, Bridge House has natural ventilation, including a series of skylights to ventilate corridors. All window applications are outfitted with custom shades, to block out even more sun exposure and keep the interior cool. On the exterior of the home, a series of photovoltaic cells on the roof allow for efficient and low impact energy sourcing. The project uses unprecedented designs and systems, with an emphasis on economy and efficiency of design, accordingly the firm was eager to incorporate BONE Structure’s steel-construction modular system in Bridge House. Combining a classic post-and-beam structure with energy-efficient solutions, BONE Structure delivers a flexible, durable, and sustainable product, that affords expedited on-sight assembly.

The real estate agents are working to clear up such property issues with the U.S. The 450-square-foot apartment built in 1949 has a terrace that looks over a stream and a rooftop patio that sits next to a road bridge, separated only by a fence. It is priced at $250,000 — a steal considering the median sale price for an existing single-family house in Southern California is about $785,000. The 450-square-foot dwelling on the 1300 block of East Main Street has a terrace that looks over the wash and a rooftop patio that sits next to a road bridge, separated only by a fence. It’s within walking distance of a Vietnamese restaurant and a hair salon but has no designated parking spot. Along the project journey Brunn revisited a familiar partner by teaming up with BOSCH, this time not only for home appliances but their full line of residential systems.

Women’s Crisis & Bridge Housing Program

Every night, more than 14,500 women experience homelessness throughout Los Angeles County, many without a safe place to sleep. "And I sell a lot of properties that've been on the market five years. We push them out the door. We sell a lot of very, very unique properties," said Lee. Crum said he's been contacted by people offering ideas for how to redesign the space.

Bridge House is set to include an EV car charging station, HVAC, home security and a full range of kitchen appliances. The inclusion of such total systems represents the long lasting partnership Brunn and BOSCH have grown. Bridge House will be BONE Structure's first built project in the City of Los Angeles. To streamline the construction from start to finish, Dan Brunn Architecture has teamed up with local contractor, MODAA Construction. DBA and MODAA recently completed two consecutive projects in Los Angeles and see the Bridge House as an opportunity to learn the BONE structure system together. In partnership with Dwell, Dan Brunn Architecture is bringing a new kind of residence to Hancock Park in Los Angeles.

Custom shades and low-emissivity glass help mitigate solar heat gain and reduce energy consumption. Brunn's design was influenced by a visit to the Breakers mansion in Rhode Island – a late 19th-century building designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt for the Vanderbilt family. For his own residence, California architect Dan Brunn has designed a long, slender home that stretches over a brook on a wooded property in Los Angeles. The bridge collapse killed six Latin American immigrants who were part of a roadwork crew on break when the cargo ship rammed into it. Only four of their bodies have been recovered from the mess of steel and concrete under the water’s surface.

The home was built in 1949 and features a patio that overlooks the Alhambra wash, as well as a “rooftop patio” about the size of the home itself which is actually located at street level. Douglas Lee, the realtor who’s been working tirelessly to field calls and host tours of the property, called it the strangest listing he’s ever had. Ensuring the long-term financial and physical health of BRIDGE-owned real estate. As the Bridge House continues construction, DBA hopes to create a lasting legacy with a home that effortlessly showcases the selection of innovative products and systems of the Bridge House sponsors. By carefully considering materiality and relationship to the site, the final form is effortlessly intertwined with nature.

The fire pit also intentionally ties into the corrugated Cor-Ten fence, bringing visual cohesion to the outdoor spaces. As a result, the home is precise and well insulated with no air leakage or infiltration. In the interior, the living room is enriched by a Living Wall of plants, which helps to purify the interior air, beyond simply contributing to the overall connection to nature. Finally, evolving to Bridge House’s windows, a punctuating transition that delineates public space from private space.

The property was also shared by the popular social media page Zillow Gone Wild, which shares bizarre and interesting real estate listings to its millions of followers. "What got me is that it's such a unique building. And that because it is so unique, it does provide unique challenges. But it also provides a lot of unique possibilities." A tiny and unique house built into the side of a bridge in Los Angeles County — dubbed the "troll house" — sold for nearly half a million dollars this month amid today's competitive housing market. A bizarre and quirky real estate property, but one that garnered tons of drive-bys and open house looky-loos due to its asking price.

Getting into the housing market in Southern California can be both daunting and confusing. The Midnight Mission opened its Women’s Crisis and Bridge Housing Program in response to the growing homelessness crisis.

Bone Structure which was also implemented in the formation of the home, is a unique steel structural system that uses nearly 90% recycled material and produces minimal waste on a building site. Architect Dan Brunn designed his home directly over the Brook of the Gardens. The kitchen, which Dan believes is the heart of the home, opens out to the living room via a concealed egress. Modern wooden cabinetry, quartz countertops, and a substantial island compliment the expansive sliding glass window doors. Floor to ceiling windows invite in a flood of natural light and sun-lit beams. Much like the living area, the kitchen is designed to promote sleek and seamless entertaining, with a minimal footprint.

California fixer-upper sells for nearly half a million dollars: 'The Bridge House of L.A.'

"The river forms a natural division for public and private spaces in the residence, marking the point where one circulation transitions into another," the architect said. "The bridge aspect allows for less land to be disturbed, which means less impact on its immediate physical environment," the architect said in a project description. By building over the water, Brunn was able to create a spacious home that treads more lightly on the earth.

Dan Brunn, FAIA, Principal of Dan Brunn Architecture is designing a one-of-a kind “bridge house,” that will, literally, bridge over a stream. The 4,500-square-foot home will serve as a demonstration of innovative systems and forward-thinking processes. The design exemplifies Brunn’s signature minimalist aesthetic evident in dynamic spatial choreography of light and volume. On the outside, a solar panel system was installed on the roof and the placement of the windows face north, which allows less heat gain in the home while still letting in a lot of light. The windows themselves are made of special aluminum and dual-pane low-E glass.

The 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom home in Alhambra has captured the attention of prospective buyers across the Los Angeles region and beyond. The realtor tasked with selling the property is hoping to strike the balance between affordable starter home and fixer-upper, but the property is truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. With Los Angeles and the surrounding communities experiencing some of the highest housing prices in the nation, many first-time buyers are looking for something affordable that won’t be a money-sink.

Bridge House by Dan Brunn Architecture

Though the Italian Renaissance-style mansion that was the Vanderbilt family’s summer retreat is a far cry from the modern profile of Bridge House, it sparked an idea for Brunn. The copper-hued Caldera Cor-Ten gas fire pit from Paloform helps define a cozy outdoor gathering space, while engaging in cohesive dialogue with the corrugated Cor-Ten fence. Both will gracefully age over time, developing a maintenance-free natural patina. A communal, semi-private outdoor gathering space, anchored by a Paloform Caldera Cor-Ten fire pit, provides a cozy hub for conversation. The outdoor feature was chosen because of its natural reactivity with the elements, developing a beautiful and maintenance-free patina over time. The idea, says Brunn, is to "let it go, let it rust," embracing the organic change and natural beauty.

People in the Ready to Work program either work in the kitchen under Chef John Trejo or on the outdoor crew, providing supplemental sanitation and landscaping to municipal and commercial customers. It’s near plenty of businesses, located within the desirable Alhambra school district and existing zoning rules would allow for the property to be used as either a full-time residence or even a commercial enterprise. It just might be the most affordable “waterfront” property in Los Angeles County, if you’re willing to put up with the home’s… eccentricities.

Doors and windows at the home’s bridge filter and reflect light, with the overlapping patterns creating a dazzling display of ethereal beauty. Traversing the stream directly rather than confining the design to one side, the home’s siting laid the framework for an immersive experience with nature – a central objective of the project. "The idea with the design was to un-design in a way," says principal Dan Brunn.

Named a “Rising Star” by Architectural Digest, Dan’s portfolio includes furniture design that addresses the needs of living room, bedroom, and bath with highly functional, sophisticated, and streamlined solutions. His first home project, Flip Flop, has appeared in more that 135 websites and publications internationally. He earned a B.Arch at University of Southern California, and a M.Arch from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. Treating the home as a portal through which to experience nature, windows and doors from Western Window Systems played a vital role in establishing the intimate relationship with the environment. The first of its kind, a completely custom Series 980 Double Pivot Door impressively spans a 20 foot horizontal opening, dramatically welcoming guests into the home. Deeper inside the home, interplay between light, shadow, and reflection creates quiet moments of ethereal beauty.

When completed, Bridge House will stretch 210 feet across the grounds, straddling a brook in an architectural maneuver that gives the project its name. When principal Dan Brunn purchased the property, his initial plan had been to renovate the existing home. The seeds of Bridge House were sown, however, when he visited the Breakers in Newport, Rhode Island.

"We expected the light patterns to emanate from the fin windows," says Brunn. "We didn’t expect the reflection," he says, marveling at the serendipitous way the sliding doors bounce back light. The result of Dan’s inspiration, paired with his unique background and signature style, is a pointed approach to development and a brilliant use of space. Once inside the home, it is clear that square footage and physical measurements do not describe the emotion that Bridge House evokes, and this is exactly how Dan intended for it to be.

Jennifer Berg's Designs Wrap You Up in Native Culture

navajo design

Clark family vacations often entailed filling up a car with weavings and driving from place to place searching for buyers. Why would we only retroactively use another culture’s legal system as the basis of propping up a belief of the ownership of a style of dress or other so-called intellectual property but we will conveniently forego the more torrid aspects of adopting it as a whole? Many Native American tribes owned slaves and that was perfectly normal to them. Many Native American tribes constantly warred with other tribes and had no qualms in pillaging and looting other Native American lands like the Commanche did with the Apache. If it accords with one tribes legal system then should we accept that practice as well? Conveniently using one aspect of another culture’s legal system, as the basis for granting them ownership of a piece of intellectual property like a style of clothing, while ignoring every other part of that legal system is logically untenable.

Two Grey Hills Navajo Rugs

If buyers want any chance of a more modest piece surviving long enough to reach anywhere near that value, Clark is insistent that they must learn how to care for their textiles. Walls are safer than, say, the floor, and it’s important to place pieces away from direct sunlight and to turn them frequently to reduce fading. Turning a weaving is also important because it discourages moths—perhaps the greatest danger to any natural textile. If you buy a weaving and are not absolutely certain it was recently cleaned, have it washed—not dry-cleaned—to destroy any hard-tospot critters before they devour your investment. And ultimately, many point to these same traders, who have exerted significant influence through their efforts to make the Navajo weavings they buy and sell as commercially successful as possible.

Navajo Chief's Blankets: Three Phases

navajo design

He led the group during a January 2019 visit to St. Michael’s campus, and returned to Notre Dame’s campus in March to sit on the jury that assessed the class’s master plan. Other Notable InspirationsLike many early civilizations, the Navajo weavers were inspired by their unforgettable pasts. Weavers would often find inspiration in pictographs, prehistoric pottery, petroglyphs, and even the natural color palettes around them.

Wrapped Up in Native Culture

They did not have “chiefs” in the strict sense of the word, but they traded their weavings with other Natives, such as the Plains Indians, who did. Only the chiefs could afford the finest, most tightly woven, and thus warmest and most waterproof, weavings, so they became known as chief’s blankets. The four different categories of Navajo rugs are the Two Grey Hills rugs, Ganado rugs, Teec Nos Pos rugs, and Crystal rugs. These four categories are all characterized by specific weaving patterns which make them distinct. However, while artists will maintain the integrity of the tradition of the weaving, they may also blend and create a special design that makes that individual rug a unique piece.

He originally helped Ralph Lauren put together much of his collection. The first sees the weaving through the prism of the Navajo’s history, while the second has more academic detail on the weavings themselves. “Compared to any other tradition, Navajo weaving is so idiosyncratic though,” says Peter.

Money Matters: Building a greener future with sustainable housing

navajo design

In about 1850, Navajo weavers began adding red rectangles to their blanket designs, which cultural historians use as a marker for "second-phase chief's blankets," which were made until about 1880. "They always have 12 rectangles, grouped in twos," Campbell says. "In the third phase, they went to nine diamonds and half-diamonds." As these design elements were added, they grew larger, becoming more centerpieces of the blankets than embellishments. During the third phase, Navajo weavers also added elements inside the diamonds, including, Campbell says, "zigzags, crosses, thin lines, stacked elements, and triangles." Below are just a few of the more iconic and storied traditions used by weavers young and old. This is why calling Navajo weavings “art” is culturally complicated.

There are many on Instagram, and Ortegas (below) is worth looking at for a current weaver in the Chimayo tradition. Pieces are smaller, and perhaps less idiosyncratic, but no less authentic. This working in sections contributes to the characteristic diagonals of a Navajo weaving. Most designs involve diamonds, or figures with diagonals at the edges.

Navajo designs often incorporate geometric shapes and patterns. These shapes and patterns are believed to have spiritual and ceremonial meanings. They can be used to decorate homes, clothing, and a variety of other objects. Navajo designs are a beautiful and meaningful part of the Navajo culture. They are used in many different ways and have a variety of different meanings. Navajo Southwestern rugs today are woven in much the same way as their antique counterparts of the past.

While there are, and have been, outstanding Navajo weavers who identify themselves as artists, there are many who have waved off the identification, concerned that attempts to call Navajo weaving art would only pigeonhole their historic practice. At DAM, Hoska, her fellow curators, and the many who have come before them, have carefully navigated the line between recognizing Navajo weavings (not, she insists, rugs) as art while acknowledging community perspectives and traditions. Frederic H. Douglas, the second curator of Native American art at DAM, spearheaded this initiative starting in 1929 by adding Indigenous pieces to the museum’s collection as art, not, Hoska says, artifact.

The Fall of the House of Usher TV Mini Series 2023

the fall of the house of usher

Further, Roderick believes that his fate is connected to the family mansion. Meanwhile, Jill becomes intimate with Rick and tells him she has missed her period. In the meantime, Jill has discovered that the Usher family has practiced twincest for the past five or six generations, right down to Maddy and Rick. All the prior generations had twins, who later became a couple and birthed twins of their own and so on down the line to Maddy and Rick, who were to continue the Usher curse.

How did Lenore, Madeline, and Roderick all die?

Not when he drugged Madeline's drink, just as she drugged Griswold's all those years earlier, and not when he cut her eyes out, mummifying her with the sapphires she so valued in her time on this earth. Roderick grows more erratic in his behaviour, and the narrator reads to his friend to try to soothe him. The plot of the romance (a fictional title invented by Poe himself, called ‘Mad Trist’) concerns a hero named Ethelred who enters the house of a hermit and slays a dragon. The story is narrated by a childhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the Usher mansion.

Analysis of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher

the fall of the house of usher

So one can say that the fictional words, read by the narrator to Roderick, are prophetic words that foreshadow or prophesize the upcoming events. These words are similar to the words of Roderick in which he prophesied his death early at the beginning of the story. Thus one can say the narration of the story is prophetic in nature. The decline of the Usher family is also foreshadowed in the story.

Series Info

These poems are composed by Poe; however, in the story, he attributed these poems to the other sources. Both of these poems counteract and therefore predict the plotline of the story. The poem “Mad Trist” is about breaking into the dwelling of a hermit by Ethelred and mirrors Madeline’s escape from the tomb.

The letters of Roderick ushers the narrator into an unknowable world. And maybe the presence of narration – an outsider – leads to the destruction of the house. The narrator is excluded from the Usher’s fear of the outsider, a fear that highlights the claustrophobic nature of the story.

For something of this nature I had indeed been prepared, no less by his letter, than by reminiscences of certain boyish traits, and by conclusions deduced from his peculiar physical conformation and temperament. One of the most interesting and perplexing threads of the finale comes with the way Arthur Pym's story wraps up. We heard this banging throughout the series, and much like Momma Usher when Roderick and Madeline were children, Madeline was not quite as dead as she initially seemed.

Character descriptions

And now, some days of bitter grief having elapsed, an observable change came over the features of the mental disorder of my friend. He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal, and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance had assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue — but the luminousness of his eye had utterly gone out.

Roderick’s mental inability to differentiate from reality and fantasy correspond to his sister’s physical weakness. These characters are employed by Poe to explore the relationship and philosophical mystery between body and mind. This short story illustrates the ability of Poe to create an emotional tone in his work by employing feelings such as guilt, doom, and fear.

The Fall of the House of Usher review – a gleefully terrifying take on Edgar Allan Poe

Roderick tells the narrator that he suffers from nerves and fear and that his senses are heightened. The narrator also notes that Roderick seems afraid of his own house. Roderick’s sister, Madeline, has taken ill with a mysterious sickness—perhaps catalepsy, the loss of control of one’s limbs—that the doctors cannot reverse. He listens to Roderick play the guitar and make up words for his songs, and he reads him stories, but he cannot lift Roderick’s spirit.

As Roderick talks about his sister’s illness, the narrator sees her pass through a distant part of the house. From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence.

Could I have judged, indeed, by the wild over-strained air of vivacity with which he hearkened, or apparently hearkened, to the words of the tale, I might well have congratulated myself upon the success of my design. I say that even their exceeding density did not prevent our perceiving this—yet we had no glimpse of the moon or stars—nor was there any flashing forth of the lightning. But the under surfaces of the huge masses of agitated vapour, as well as all terrestrial objects immediately around us, were glowing in the unnatural light of a faintly luminous and distinctly visible gaseous exhalation which hung about and enshrouded the mansion.

Completely unnerved, I leaped to my feet; but the measured rocking movement of Usher was undisturbed. His eyes were bent fixedly before him, and throughout his whole countenance there reigned a stony rigidity. But, as I placed my hand upon his shoulder, there came a strong shudder over his whole person; a sickly smile quivered about his lips; and I saw that he spoke in a low, hurried, and gibbering murmur, as if unconscious of my presence.

In an instant afterward he rapped, with a gentle touch, at my door, and entered, bearing a lamp. His countenance was, as usual, cadaverously wan—but, moreover, there was a species of mad hilarity in his eyes—an evidently restrained hysteria in his whole demeanour. His air appalled me—but anything was preferable to the solitude which I had so long endured, and I even welcomed his presence as a relief. For me at least—in the circumstances then surrounding me—there arose out of the pure abstractions which the hypochondriac contrived to throw upon his canvas, an intensity of intolerable awe, no shadow of which felt I ever yet in the contemplation of the certainly glowing yet too concrete reveries of Fuseli. English majors will likely know where some of the stories are going just by seeing the episode names.

It was shortly after this that Auggie arrived at the house to hear Roderick's confession. Only, as evidenced by the noises coming from the basement, Madeline wasn't quite dead. Decades later, once it became clear that Verna was the one killing off the Usher children, Madeline tried to sidestep the deal by convincing Roderick to kill himself. But Verna wasn't willing to let him get off that easy and brought him back to face the full extent of his reckoning, the death of his granddaughter Lenore (Kyliegh Curran), the only morally good Usher. Analysis of Edgar Allan Poes The Fall of the House of Usher Literary Theory and Criticism

the fall of the house of usher

A sensation of stupor oppressed me, as my eyes followed her retreating steps. When a door, at length, closed upon her, my glance sought instinctively and eagerly the countenance of the brother — but he had buried his face in his hands, and I could only perceive that a far more than ordinary wanness had overspread the emaciated fingers through which trickled many passionate tears. It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit, of his earnest desire to see me, and of the solace he expected me to afford him. He entered, at some length, into what he conceived to be the nature of his malady.

Roderick Usher

Nevertheless, in this mansion of gloom I now proposed to myself a sojourn of some weeks. Its proprietor, Roderick Usher, had been one of my boon companions in boyhood; but many years had elapsed since our last meeting. A letter, however, had lately reached me in a distant part of the country — a letter from him — which, in its wildly importunate nature, had admitted of no other than a personal reply. The writer spoke of acute bodily illness — of a mental disorder which oppressed him — and of an earnest desire to see me, as his best, and indeed his only personal friend, with a view of attempting, by the cheerfulness of my society, some alleviation of his malady. It was the manner in which all this, and much more, was said — it was the apparent heart that went with his request — which allowed me no room for hesitation; and I accordingly obeyed forthwith what I still considered a very singular summons. I regarded her with an utter astonishment not unmingled with dread—and yet I found it impossible to account for such feelings.

Moreover, another horrific element of the story is the dank underground tomb. All of the falls in the novel, the fall of Roderick, the fall of the bloodline of the Usher Family, and the fall of the house, occurs at the same time at the end of the story. It alludes to the poems “Mad Trist” and “The Haunted Palace” by Sir Launcelot Canning.

Madeline Usher

Roderick has come from a miserable childhood with a puritanical, sickly mother who believes that “pain and suffering are the kiss of Jesus”. As a parent himself, Roderick doesn’t fare much better, having six children by five different women who range from obnoxious hedonists (Napoleon and Prospero Usher) to despicable creeps (Frederick, Tamerlane and Victoria) to obnoxious, despicable hedonist creeps (Camille). The family is made up of Flanagan’s regular ensemble of actors, and to buy them as relatives requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but for Flanagan fans, there’s great fun to be had seeing how these favourites fit into his new tale of terror.

What deal did the Ushers make with Verna?

the fall of the house of usher

The overarching narrative of The Fall of the House of Usher loosely follows Poe's 1839 short story of the same name, with Roderick recounting his decades-spanning tale to Auggie inside his decrepit childhood home. Throughout the evening, Roderick is tortured by visions of his dead children—who appear to him as he relays the gruesome ways in which each of them met their end—while banging sounds that he says are coming from his twin sister, Fortunato COO Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), can be heard emanating from the home's basement. The short story “The Fall of the House of Usher” contains a quintessential characteristic of gothic fiction. There is a dreary landscape, haunted house, mysterious sickness, and double personality.

The crossing of borders pertains vitally to the Gothic horror of the tale. We know from Poe’s experience in the magazine industry that he was obsessed with codes and word games, and this story amplifies his obsessive interest in naming. “Usher” refers not only to the mansion and the family, but also to the act of crossing a -threshold that brings the narrator into the perverse world of Roderick and Madeline.

“The Fall of the House of Usher” (

His fears are apparent and manifest themselves through the sentient and supernatural family estate. The story deals with both mental and physical illness and its effects on people who are close to you. During one sleepless night, the narrator reads aloud to Usher as eerie sounds are heard throughout the mansion.

However, Madeline appears to be central to the claustrophobic and symmetrical logic of the story. Madeline suppresses Roderick by not permitting him to see her separate or essentially different from him. This attack is completed when she finally attacks and kills him at the end of the story. Even though he metaphorically employs the word “house,” he also uses it to describe the real house.

As we approach the finale of The Fall of the House of Usher, after learning of Frederick's (Henry Thomas) grisly death in the penultimate episode, it would seem that we've finally caught up with the present, where Roderick sits, drinking expensive cognac and speaking with Dupin. But things aren't always as they seem; the final episode takes us inside everything that lingers, bringing everything full circle. Flanagan finishes his Netflix contract on a high, gleefully capturing Poe’s magic, eerie romance and sense of dread. His shows have become the streaming service’s best offerings for spooky season, and it is hard to imagine how that void will be filled.

The narrator unwittingly draws the whole structure by undermining the fear of the outside. The poem “Mad Trist” and Madeline escapes also show the similar yet playful crossing of the borders. Thus Poe buries the pun in tales in an invented severity of medieval romance, and this earned him popularity in the magazines of America.

For example, the narrator observes that the mansion is a reflection in the shallow pool or tarn that joins the front of the house. The house is doubled through its image in the tarn; however, the image is upside down, which characterizes the relationship between Madeline and Roderick. Madeline appears to be suffering from the typical problems of nineteen-century women. However, when Madeline comes out from the tomb, she possesses more power in the story and counteracts the weak, immobile, and nervous disposition of her brother. Edger Allan Poe also creates a claustrophobic sensation in his story. The narrator of the story is trapped in the charm of Roderick’s attraction, and he cannot escape it until the house of Usher completely collapses.

Her love affair with Rick is rekindled as she learns he suffers from the same malady that robbed his twin sister, Maddy, of her sharp mind before taking her life. His affliction is manifested in a rare nerve condition, which renders him hypersensitive. Under the watchful eye of the caretaker, Nurse Thatcher (Beth Grant), Jill appears to be haunted by Maddy's ghost. The worldly reason, however, assigned for this singular proceeding, was one which I did not feel at liberty to dispute. The brother had been led to his resolution (so he told me) by consideration of the unusual character of the malady of the deceased, of certain obtrusive and eager inquiries on the part of her medical men, and of the remote and exposed situation of the burial-ground of the family. I will not deny that when I called to mind the sinister countenance of the person whom I met upon the staircase, on the day of my arrival at the house, I had no desire to oppose what I regarded as at best but a harmless, and by no means an unnatural, precaution.

But, still, a few lingering things remain that need to click in order for the series—based on the collected writings of Edgar Allen Poe—to really all fall into place. No outlet was observed in any portion of its vast extent, and no torch, or other artificial source of light was discernible; yet a flood of intense rays rolled throughout, and bathed the whole in a ghastly and inappropriate splendour. “It’s batshit crazy in the best possible way,” Carla Gugino told Netflix during production. “It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul.” In the series, Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character. “There is a fantastical supernatural element to the story, and she is the manifestation of that,” she added.

So, dear reader, as we part ways on this nail-art journey, I hope you carry forward this essence of creative freedom. I hope you find the courage to dare, the audacity to experiment, and the boldness to create.

The longevity of abstract nails depends on factors such as the quality of the products used and how well they are maintained. In the world of nail art, abstract designs have the power to elevate a simple manicure into a show-stopping piece of art, turning heads wherever you go. With abstract nail designs, your hands become an ever-changing canvas, allowing you to express your creativity freely. Now, I must warn you, once you fall down this rabbit hole of endless possibilities, you may find yourself completely engrossed in the allure of abstract nail art. However, be mindful of your products and always prioritize nail health. Look for quality nail polishes, gels, or acrylics free from harmful chemicals.

That’s why abstract nail art is so great — it gives even the most inept artists the opportunity to wear and create works of art on their fingertips. You can copy the black polish used here, or take it up a notch (or 10) with the colorful lacquer of your choice. Here, cranberry, burgundy, and chrome play together in a design reminiscent of Jenna Rink's infamous mini dress.

“If it doesn't look nice, just remove it and try again,” says Boyce. We couldn't be more into the personality-packed abstract nails trend, particularly because it feels like a trip down memory lane. The characteristic swirls, dots, and colors are giving major retro energy.

You can have this design by using the colors and patterns keeping a certain sequence. You can splash the desired colors on your nails to have this abstract nail art. No specific order or patterns need to be followed.

While the base is more of the abstract lines that we love, the tiny flowers are a fun and unique touch. Who says dark colors are only reserved for the winter? Channel your inner Cher Horowitz with this checkered manicure. To add a little oomph, Glass suggests painting on (or adding nail stickers) smiley faces, or swirls.

If you would like historical and ecological tidbits, the captain is well-prepared to educate. He might even let you take the wheel for a photograph. As the sun starts to sink down into the Gulf Coast waters, a wonderous show begins across the sky. The streaks of yellow and orange begin to darken as the sun dips down and reflects on the Mississippi Sound. Each sunset is a magical experience to watch but even more so when you take in the view from the open waters. You’re surrounded by an exquisite mixture of sun, sea, and gentle breezes.
